EXPANDED Legislative Lobbying Effort

The battle over service tax on self storage is not over - YET! As of the close of the veto session of the 96thg General Assembly this December, there has been no movement to advance this legislation. HOWEVER, the General Assembly will return for 8 days in January and there is some speculation that they will discusss ALL taxation options. So ISSA is gearing up for this "mini" lame duck session followed by the 97th General Assembly.

In addition, ISSA will be initiating legislation to re-write parts of the Self-Service Storage Facility Act. Changes will include lien notification, vehicle removal and late fees. All of this work takes time and money. Our partnership with the national Self Storage Association is helping to bring about the needed financial resources to accomplish these legislative tasks, but we need your help. SSA is matching dollar-for-dollar to help us meet our lobby expenses, so now we need your help again. Please click on the voluntary assessment form and make a contribution to our effort to streamline the lien notification requirements and other actions and at the same time save you money. Thank you.

ISSA Affiliates With SSA

The Illinois Self Storage Association (ISSA) is pleased to announce its affiliation with the national Self Storage Association (SSA).

The Illinois Self Storage Association (ISSA) board of directors voted to join SSA’s formal affiliation program at its October 27, 2010 meeting. The SSA’s affiliation program was created as a structure for all self storage associations to jointly pursue common goals and communicate regularly throughout the year.

According to ISSA President Mike Metzger, “This affiliation brings added member value through registration discounts for SSA sponsored events; member subscription to the Globe magazine; free webinars; and increased political capital.”

With the support of this affiliation, ISSA will be introducing legislation in January to amend the Illinois Self-Service Storage Facility Act. Included in this modernization project are changes to lien notification (1st Class v Certified Mail), electronic delivery of public notice of lien sales, late fees and vehicle removal. In addition, ISSA with SSA’s help will continue to wage its fight to keep sales tax on self storage out of Illinois.

“We welcome the Illinois SSA into the family of associations affiliated with the national SSA,” said SSA President & CEO Michael T. Scanlon, Jr. “The SSA affiliation program is all about working together, one for all and all for a better industry with less government intrusion and taxes. With 31 state and national associations already formally working with the SSA, together we have improved more than two dozen laws during the past three years. We expect great success as we pursue legislative goals in the Land of Lincoln.”
